Travel Scary (noun)
An unnerving travel experience or situation encountered that induces fear, anxiety, or discomfort due to potential risks, unfamiliar environments, or unsettling circumstances.
Back in the day, if I flew on a plane one time, it was a good year. However, I am grateful to say that is not my situation anymore. I’d like to say I am a seasoned traveler now, and I’ve learned few tips and tricks. Here are a few things I wish I would’ve known back when this travel scary happened.
Rainy Season
May to October is rain and hurricane season in Florida. However, in comparison, this time in Chicago usually has nice weather. Even though we do have the occasional thunderstorm, it is nothing compared to what happens down in Florida. At the time, we knew it was rainy season, but I don’t think we fully understood what that meant. Now, whenever this time comes around and there is a trip to Florida, it is crucial to expect the unexpected. Similar to Chicago, it will be sunny then rain cats and dogs and then go back to being sunny. So another quick tip is to always carry an umbrella, raincoat, or poncho when traveling because you truly never know.
Be Comfortable
I’m sure you have come across travelers who don’t look like they’re traveling or have traveled several hours. Even now when I’m taking redeye transatlantic flights, I always see people wearing the opposite of me, who is wearing the closest thing to pajamas without them being actual pajamas. I like to dress for optimal comfort in these situations.
Additionally, I know you’ve either experienced this yourself or seen other people struggle with all their luggage in one hand and maybe a pet, child, or drink in the other. If it was you, you’d also probably think ‘how can I possibly bring a pillow or blanket and carry it all. I only have two hands!’. Well let me tell you, I have found it’s better if you just do it. I know it sometimes feels like a hassle to carry the pillow or the blanket. However, there have been multiple times, this time included, where I wished had an extra layer or a place to rest my head or cushion my back. Of course, try to bring the travel version to help optimize space, but now I have the mentality of I’d rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. You could also say I’m a bit of an overpacker.
Airport Resources
Now that I have had the opportunity to travel through multiple airports, I have learned that lots of airports actually have amenities to make your time there more enjoyable. During this time, I had no idea if the Orlando airport had a lounge or rest area that we could access. We kind of just found the closest corner with outlets to rest. I know, at the time, it was late, we were tired, and I was sick, but I think looking at a map or the airport’s website could have been helpful.
Overall, this was definitely a learning experience. I think if the same situation happened today I would probably be a bit more calm. However, if I was sick the same way I was sick then, I would just go to the hospital.
