How to Spend 24 hours in San Diego

If you have found yourself in San Diego, America’s Finest City, for twenty-four hours- boy do you have a lot to discover. This gem on the Southern Californian coast has a lot to offer with its stunning beaches, vibrant neighborhoods, and rich cultural scene- there’s always something to do! From our personal experience, we have curated the perfect itinerary for a day in S.D. So, how to spend a perfect day exploring some of the city’s most iconic spots, from art and culture to seaside relaxation.

Starting the day bright and early, we recommend heading to downtown La Jolla for the ultimate breakfast spot at Better Buzz coffee shop.  Treat yourself to their fluffy pancakes or avocado toast while soaking up the energetic, yet laid-back vibe. After filling up with a blend of delicious flavors, take a lovely stroll whilst enjoying the shops and small businesses, soon you’ll stumble across The San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. The SDMCA is a fresh and immersive way to experience art and culture from all around the world and modern times. The museum showcases impressive sculptures, multimedia installations, and paintings that provoke your thoughts. Some of our favorite pieces we saw are After the Deluge by Yoshitomo Nara art piece and Craig Kauffman installation. Whether you’re an art-aficionado or just curious, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to connect with the pulse of the contemporary art world in San Diego.

After a cultured morning, it’s time to hit the beach! Head over to La Jolla Beach for a classic picturesque stretch of coastline. Whether you’re up for a swim, a walk along the shoreline, or just lounging in the sun, La Jolla offers the typical Southern California beach experience- blonde, tan surfers (…duh).  Not to mention, it is also a very popular place for kayaking or snorkeling, and tide-pooling, especially around the La Jolla Cove area, where you can explore the rich pacific ecosystem. If you have more time in San Diego, you should dive and explore!

Balboa Park is another iconic spot to check out in San Diego. It is a historic urban cultural park and- actually- one of the oldest reserves in the US. There is always something to do there! The park hosts various museums, theaters, restaurants, and the famous San Diego Zoo. Another area to visit in the park is the Japanese Friendship garden- it features traditional elements such as koi ponds, stone pathways, and elegant bonsai trees. Balboa Park also directly connects to Downtown San Diego- a perfect segway to the next activity recommended.

Make your way to the port area from the park. The waterfront is bustling with activity, from the historic ships at the Maritime Museum to the modern attractions at Seaport Village. Take a leisurely walk along the Embarcadero during sunset! The views of the bay and the city’s skyline are unmatched. Don’t forget to check out the USS Midway Museum, where you can tour this historic aircraft carrier.

Finally for dinner, end your day with a homey meal in one of the restaurants in the Little Italy District. Choose from one of the many acclaimed Italian restaurants in the area. Whether you’re in the mood for classic pasta, gourmet pizza, or fresh seafood, Little Italy has it all! Nonna’s, for example, offers a delightful Italian dining experience with a cozy ambiance and comfort food. There are so many great places in Little Italy- even for aperitif! Rooftop bars are everywhere overlooking India Street also enjoy the stunning views of the city and the bay. The vibrant energy of the neighborhood continues into the night, making it a perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the twenty-four hours in San Diego!
