Welcome to Entre Nous, which is French for “between us,” which is the whole idea. Every Sunday: where we were this week, what’s under review, one early verdict, one observation. Shorter than our features, more honest than a postcard. Let’s begin.
Where we were
Cannes, for a day. The occasion for a Cannes day trip from Marseille was a social with the American Club of the Riviera, because it turns out an entire population of Americans has quietly moved to the South of France, and we wanted to meet them. Call it networking; call it fieldwork. Every conversation about why they moved and what they wished they’d known is research we bank for our travelers, who tend to ask the same questions a year before they act on them.
About Cannes itself, some honesty. It is packed in July, and it does not care that you’re dining alone: reserve ahead or wander hungry, a lesson we re-learned so you don’t have to. It is beautifully walkable, bright, and easy, and nearly everyone speaks English, which makes it the gentlest possible landing for anglophones. That is also its ceiling. If you want real immersion in the South of France, Cannes is not where you’ll find it. We went to one event, stayed close to the hotel otherwise, and took the train home without regret.
Under review
The Canopy by Hilton Cannes enters our Under Review file, the new status for places we’ve experienced once and aren’t ready to rule on. The good: we were upgraded to an apartment and loved it, genuinely one of the nicer rooms we’ve had this summer. The hesitation: the service ran a four out of five, and at this level we grade against five. Capable, pleasant, and a step slower and less anticipatory than the room deserved. One stay is a data point, not a verdict. We’ll be back, and then we’ll rule.
One early verdict. The train from Marseille to Cannes
Approved without hesitation. Two easy hours, and the Mediterranean rides along with you most of the way. The move is to sit on the sea side, which means the right side heading toward Cannes and the left side heading home. Window seat, no laptop, watch the coast go by. Cheaper than any show in Cannes and better than most.
One observation
Now the thing we’re still deciding whether to laugh at. At the hotel, service noticeably changed the moment the system revealed our loyalty tier. Same guest, same room, same requests. Different energy, once the profile said diamond. We watched the recalibration happen in real time, the little scramble of people adjusting to a status they hadn’t pictured belonging to us.
Entre nous: service that improves after your tier is discovered was never service. It was protocol. The hotels we stamp Approved are the ones that treat the unannounced guest like the diamond, because that is the only version of hospitality that can’t be faked. It’s also why we always check in as nobody in particular. You learn so much more.
À dimanche prochain. Same place.
You know you’d travel with us.
