We don’t usually book Airbnbs. After enough listings that promised “charming” and delivered someone’s spare futon, hotels became the safe default and we stopped apologizing for it. So when a client asked us to put her whole bachelorette under one roof in Sedona, we went looking with low expectations and a long list of doubts.
Cathedral Overlook retired the list. We booked it for a group of eight, ran the weekend out of it, and left the kind of converts who now say “well, some Airbnbs” with a straight face.
Here is the honest review, from the side of the people who planned it.
The house, and why eight people were never on top of each other
Cathedral Overlook sits off Lower Red Rock Loop, about 10 minutes from West Sedona and one mile from Red Rock State Park, on a quiet cliffside where the red rock views do most of the talking. The home is built for a group that wants to be together without living in each other’s laps. Four bedrooms sleep eight: two with king beds (one a primary suite with its own bath and private patio), one with a queen, and a fourth with two twins that suited the pair who booked last. Three full bathrooms meant nobody negotiated for the shower, and the spa-style soaking tub framed by a red rock view became its own small attraction.
The shared spaces are where the weekend actually happened. A chef’s kitchen with room for more than one cook, a long dining table that seated all eight, a living room everyone could pile into, and a wet bar that earned its keep. Outside is the part nobody wanted to leave: a hot tub positioned for the sunset, a stone fire pit, a gas grill, and a covered patio set for slow dinners under a sky with more stars than most of us see in a year. The wifi is fast for the people who can’t fully unplug, and the cell reception is spotty enough to gently encourage the ones who should. Four driveway spaces handled a group arriving in shifts, which sounds minor until you have parked a caravan in Sedona.
Working with Clara made the whole thing effortless
This is the part that matters most when you plan trips for a living. Cathedral Overlook is managed by Clara of Sedona Premier Vacations, and working with her was the smoothest host experience we have had, full stop. Check-in was self-service through a smart lock, which sounds small until you have shepherded eight people to a property and not one of them is stuck in a driveway waiting on a key. The house was immaculate. Not “fine for an Airbnb” clean. Actually clean, the kind you notice the second you walk in.
Groceries arrived ahead of the group, waiting and sorted. A private chef came in to cook dinner one night, and the kitchen and that long table made it feel like the home had been designed for exactly that. Every question we sent Clara came back fast, which is what you want when you are holding someone else’s once-in-a-lifetime weekend in your hands.
Then there was the javelina. One evening a creature that looks like a pig, but we learned is emphatically not a pig, wandered through the property. Eight people from major cities responded with all the calm you would imagine, which is to say none. Clara replied almost immediately, told us what it was, and reassured us it was a perfectly normal Sedona neighbor minding its own business. Crisis, such as it was, averted.
Who it’s for
Cathedral Overlook is built for the group trip that deserves a real house: a bachelorette, a milestone birthday, a family that wants one table big enough for everyone. It is private, it is genuinely beautiful, and it is run by someone who treats hospitality as a craft rather than a checklist. This is the whole reason we stay where our clients stay. A listing can promise a view, but only a weekend on the patio tells you the host answers in 10 minutes and the place is spotless on arrival.
We booked it as skeptics. We would book it again tomorrow.
