Hi, everyone! My name is Olivia, and I’m a third-year undergraduate student from North Carolina studying International Studies at NC State University. I’m also the International Relations & Global Engagement intern with Ariventures Abroad, and I am currently wrapping up my study abroad in South Africa—a five-month experience that has completely reshaped my life.
Living in Stellenbosch, South Africa, I’ve explored, learned, and grown in ways I never imagined possible. Like so many students, I’d heard how meaningful studying abroad could be, and now I proudly count myself among those who understand firsthand. These months have been full of challenges and unforgettable moments. I’ve built friendships with people from around the world that I know will last for years to come, and I’ve experienced a level of personal growth that is hard to put into words.
Stepping Outside My Comfort Zone
Before this experience, North Carolina was my comfort zone. Leaving it behind for a completely different environment was daunting, but I quickly realized the value of stretching beyond what’s familiar. I’ve seen nature in a new way, learned about cultural and societal differences I may never have otherwise encountered, and gained a deeper understanding of the economic divides that are too often underdiscussed back home.
What’s remarkable is how much this experience has tied me to South Africa. After five months here, I feel a sense of belonging and connection to this place. That connection has fueled a passion for activism and a desire to see the country I now love continue to improve and thrive.
Why I Joined Ariventures Abroad
My study abroad in South Africa is one of the most impactful things I’ve ever done, and I know the lessons will stay with me. That’s why I wanted to join Ariventures Abroad—an organization just as passionate about international education as I am.
Ariventures Abroad works to make global learning more equitable, especially for underrepresented minority students. We focus on sustainability and student preparedness so more people can have access to transformative international experiences.
A Word of Encouragement
If you’re unsure about studying abroad—if the idea of leaving home and stepping into the unknown feels intimidating—ask yourself this: Will I ever have the opportunity to do something like this again? Traveling in my twenties is something I will never regret, and I hope you give yourself the chance to experience it too. Studying abroad isn’t always easy, but the growth, perspective, and memories you gain are truly priceless.
