The argument against renting a villa has always been the same: you give up the services. No spa downstairs, no concierge, no one to call. The house is beautiful and the house is also just a house. We spent a week this summer testing the counterargument at a villa in Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer on the French Riviera, a stay we’ve written about before, and we can now report that the argument is dead. You can rebuild the five star hotel around any villa you rent. The trick is bringing the villa rental services to the house instead of leaving the house to find them. We don’t plan trips we haven’t been on, and this one we barely left.
The trick, stated plainly
A five star hotel is a bundle: the room, the spa, the photographer at the pool bar you wish you’d hired, the staff who make everything appear. Renting a villa unbundles it, and most people stop there, accepting the trade. The better move is rebundling. Nearly every service a hotel sells exists as an independent professional in that same town, often better than the hotel version, and willing to come to you. The villa becomes the room. You supply the rest of the hotel.
Proof one, the spa came upstairs
We first found our masseuse through Airbnb Experiences, which we’ll say plainly because it’s true and because it proves the point: the talent is out there in the open. She set up at the villa and worked through all four of us, one by one, while the others floated between the pool and the terrace.
What made her exceptional is what made her permanent. Gentle when the body asked for gentle, and fully capable of working out every kink when it didn’t. Specialties we had never encountered before. A facial, on top of the massage work, that held its own against spa treatments we’ve paid multiples for in hotels. We have since brought her back for multiple stays with multiple different guests, and every single review came back five stars. She is now on the Ariventures preferred vendors list, which is where this story stops being a tip and starts being what we do.
Proof two, the photographer
Same origin, same outcome. Found through Airbnb Experiences, hired for a villa shoot, and immediately distinguishable from every vacation photographer we’ve gambled on before. Real direction, so nobody stood around wondering what to do with their hands. A genuine command of photographing different skin types and lighting a whole group so everyone looks good in the same frame, which anyone who has been the darkest or lightest person in a group photo knows is a skill, not a default. Short-form content and video on top of the stills. Delivery came back fast.
Multiple bookings later, all five star reviews, and the photographer joined the preferred vendors list too.
What a preferred vendors list actually is
Here’s the part a first-time reader deserves to have explained. When we find someone excellent, we don’t bookmark them. We test them again, with different guests, and again, until the reviews are unanimous. Only then do they enter our book, and from that point our travelers book them through us: vetted, scheduled, and guaranteed by our standard rather than a stranger’s star rating. It’s why we’re not naming either of these two. Their names are no longer a tip. They’re an asset our travelers get access to.
The verdict
Both are officially Ariventures Approved, and no, we won’t tell you who they are. The larger verdict is the one you can use anywhere: stop treating a villa as a hotel with the services removed. The services exist in every town worth visiting. Finding them takes a search and some luck. Knowing which ones survive four guests and a facial: that’s the part that takes a book like ours.
